That appreciation led to a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Interior Design, at the CIDA accredited program at Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota, Florida. After graduation, Becky made the move to Canada, working as an interior designer on spaces from Toronto to Vancouver. Several projects that she has worked on have been featured in Canadian House & Home magazine, including her own residence. In search of warmer weather and sweet iced tea, Becky recently relocated to the Triangle area. Her motivation, energy, creativity and passion for design has continued to assist her in creating dynamic interior environments. Becky enjoys traveling, changing peoples' minds about vegan baking one cupcake at a time, and the company of her partner, Chris, their 2 dogs & 2 house rabbits.

TBJ: Smaller Homes

Chad was recently interviewed for a Triangle Business Journal article titled, "Smaller homes, but full of amenities". The article focuses on the fact that the average size of a new single family home has dropped over the past year, though the quality expected by most buyers has increased significantly. "More
buyers look for smaller homes with lower price points, incorporating
designs and features to maximize space is becoming a higher priority" the article states. They later expanded their services, offering office supplies to local businesses as well as public school textbooks. In 1948, Alfred Williams began supplying office furniture. Since the late 1970's, the company's showroom has been located on a busy stretch of Capital Boulevard. While conveniently located, the busy thoroughfare lacks integration with the urban context of downtown Raleigh.Today, Alfred Williams & Company are members of the Herman Miller Certified Dealer Network and offer interior design services, as well as office environments with in-house delivery and installation. With a focus on customer service and building strong working relationships, the company has considered a return downtown for many years. Chairman and CEO J. Blount Williams expects the new downtown location to perform as a catalyst for renewed energy for the company, all while hosting "a dynamic place for our customers to visit." Their return to downtown Raleigh shows renewed interest in being a part
of the vibrant, urban fabric from which the company began over 140 years
ago.The design incorporates the same simple, modernist palette found in a number of Herman Miller designs: glass, metal and wood. With refined detailing and materials integration, the design hopes to significantly elevate the street presence by activating a formerly austere concrete box.

One Restaurant

Chapel Hill, NC5750 SFThe reuse of an uninspiring former restaurant space to become a highly visible and visually stunning new restaurant concept was not easily achieved. The technical challenges of satisfying the requirements of both the health department and those of an owner with extremely discriminating tastes provided another degree of difficulty. Add to that a very aggressive schedule and budget and you get one of the most challenging restaurant projects that the firm has completed to date. In spite of all the challenges, we were able to deliver a striking space that is simultaneously elegant and understated. With a very minimal palette of materials and colors and through the use of simple millwork pieces and drywall planes, the space is activated to display the two key components of the business; cooking and wine. The open kitchen allows the patrons to view the award-winning chef prepare their meals with energy and excitement. The wine is displayed in custom designed wood and steel cabinets which serve functionally as storage for the bottles and aesthetically as a repeating texture that highlights the vast selection of wines that are offered.

WNAA FM 90.1

Greensboro, NC2000 SFThis radio station relocation project is an interior upfit of an existing office and administrative space within the General Classroom Building at NC A&T State University. The project’s main focus was to create a new identity and home for the popular Greensboro / Winston-Salem radio station, WNAA-FM 90.1, by developing a series of spaces to house an On-Air Studio, two production Studios, a Live Conference Studio, administrative offices and office support. The staff and equipment will be relocated from the old space to the new space once the renovation is completed. The design solution considers the broadcast studios as a cluster of rooms, centralized within the existing space, wrapped in a series of staggered wood and perforated metal panels. The finishes and arrangement of the wall panels are subtly influenced by broadcast equipment such as the perforated metal microphone and staggered equalizer bars of the sound board. This project was completed as a collaboration with Vines Architecture.

AIA Triangle Homes Tour

Saturday, October 2ndPlease join us at the Barker Residence this Saturday, October 2nd, between 10am and 6pm as we showcase one of the ten homes on the inaugural AIA Triangle Homes Tour. August 2010Last weekend, The Bridge House was featured as the News and Observer’s Home of the Month. Each month, the News and Observer features one home on the last Saturday of the month. Design professionals visit the home, speak with the owners and the Architects and contribute an essay and photo gallery for the series. Architect and NC State School of Architecture Professor Wendy Redfield
wrote an article for the ongoing Home of the Month series. To describe the house, Redfield states, "rooms and spaces are generous in size, but it is the attention to
detail, modulated light, careful combination of materials and
responsiveness to the clients' needs that make this house so successful." The homeowners consider the house a success because, "It feels like home."Please take the time to read the full article here.

Hometta

Hometta
Update – Schematic Design

Vernacular Studio is well
into the schematic design phase for their first set of house plans for Hometta.
Our firm was selected out of a large number of national firms to provide
modern, yet affordable house plans to a wider based audience. The excerpt below
is from an article published in Artists + Artisans which explains why Hometta
chose Vernacular Studio out of the numerous applicants to join their team.

Among the 24 original firms represented are
Roger Sherman of Los Angeles, davidclovers of
Hong Kong and Min/Day of San Francisco.
Recently selected are Vincent Snyder Architect of Austin, LTL Architects of New York and Vernacular
Studio of Raleigh.

The founders are careful about who they
select, and why. They chose Vernacular, for example, because they’d identified
that young North Carolina
studio as a group with a substantial body of built work that combined
traditional and modern elements.

“We’re looking for enthusiasm,” Ann said.
“We’re looking for studios that take a good idea and go beyond.”

Raleigh's annual holiday parade is the largest between DC and Atlanta (kudos to our friend Gene for the stat!) and this year nearly 60,000 people turned out for the floats, marching bands and a Santa Claus finale. Our corner location provides an ideal location to view the parade in comfort on what usually turns out to be a chilly winter day...though we were fortunate to have beautiful weather this year!

2009 NC AIA Awards

July 15, 2009We are pleased to announce that 101 Lounge + Café has been awarded a Merit Award for the 2009 NC AIA Design Awards.
