August 2010Last weekend, The Bridge House was featured as the News and Observer’s Home of the Month. Each month, the News and Observer features one home on the last Saturday of the month. Design professionals visit the home, speak with the owners and the Architects and contribute an essay and photo gallery for the series. Architect and NC State School of Architecture Professor Wendy Redfield
wrote an article for the ongoing Home of the Month series. To describe the house, Redfield states, "rooms and spaces are generous in size, but it is the attention to
detail, modulated light, careful combination of materials and
responsiveness to the clients' needs that make this house so successful." The homeowners consider the house a success because, "It feels like home."Please take the time to read the full article here.

Hometta

Hometta
Update – Schematic Design

Vernacular Studio is well
into the schematic design phase for their first set of house plans for Hometta.
Our firm was selected out of a large number of national firms to provide
modern, yet affordable house plans to a wider based audience. The excerpt below
is from an article published in Artists + Artisans which explains why Hometta
chose Vernacular Studio out of the numerous applicants to join their team.

Among the 24 original firms represented are
Roger Sherman of Los Angeles, davidclovers of
Hong Kong and Min/Day of San Francisco.
Recently selected are Vincent Snyder Architect of Austin, LTL Architects of New York and Vernacular
Studio of Raleigh.

The founders are careful about who they
select, and why. They chose Vernacular, for example, because they’d identified
that young North Carolina
studio as a group with a substantial body of built work that combined
traditional and modern elements.

“We’re looking for enthusiasm,” Ann said.
“We’re looking for studios that take a good idea and go beyond.”

Raleigh's annual holiday parade is the largest between DC and Atlanta (kudos to our friend Gene for the stat!) and this year nearly 60,000 people turned out for the floats, marching bands and a Santa Claus finale. Our corner location provides an ideal location to view the parade in comfort on what usually turns out to be a chilly winter day...though we were fortunate to have beautiful weather this year!

2009 NC AIA

July 15, 2009We are pleased to announce that 101 Lounge + Café has been awarded a Merit Award for the 2009 NC AIA Design Awards.

2009 Home of the Month

July 25, 2009The Edenton Street Residence was featured as the News and Observer's Home of the Month for July 2009. The client approached Vernacular Studio looking for a clean, modern design to define the public spaces of the building, primarily the elevator lobbies of the three story building which includes a dramatic double height entry lobby. To emphasize the vertical nature of the space and create a design that draws on the beauty of native North Carolina, the lobby was wrapped with layered vertical painted panels, an abstraction of the area’s forest scape. To draw the eye up and tie the upper and lower lobby spaces together, white tile defines the floor which echoes the walnut paneled balcony opening and the white floating ceiling above. The warmth of the central walnut paneled elevator core contrasts with the cool blue gray of the lobby walls, creating a balanced and calming sense of place. In addition to the lobby design, Vernacular Studio assisted in selecting both interior and exterior finishes to complement the overall aesthetic.

Studio Retreat

Cherokee National Forest, TNThough we never seem to have as much time for fun as we would like, we regularly come together as a Studio to enjoy time outside of the office for food and drinks, or to talk about the latest craze in architecture. At the same time we work very diligently to organize office events that help bring us closer together as a team.If you like beautiful scenery, or the mountains, or being on a lake, or boats, or fishing, or skiing, or just relaxing by the fire, then you would probably fit in just fine at the lake house. Being perched on the side of a small mountain a few hundred feet above the water, getting there can be a bit of a pain. But once you breathe the air and take in the view, you really never want to leave. As the unofficial site for company retreats and getaways, trips to Lake Watauga give us the opportunity to clear our heads and plan for the future…without the daily craziness that is the life of an architect.

V-500

Having fun is part of our job description. At the first annual V 500 competition it was a close race from start to finish. Breakfast and mimosas at Byrd Street, followed by a trip to the arcade. After a disputed video game dance off result we headed outside to the race track. Chad took a commanding lead, but not without some rubbing (more like side swiping). Next we made our way to the putt-putt where Brett won by the tip of the clown's mouth. Once we charged ourselves back up with lunch, it was off to Western Lanes to seal the deal...where Rob came charging out of nowhere with a Big Lebowski-esque performance. So impressive, in fact, that Rob wiped out leader board on that one event, clinching the inaugural V-500. Look out next year Alexander... we're coming for you.

Reception Area

Cary, NCThis most visible and memorable component of most office spaces, the reception desk represents a special sort of challenge and reward for most architects. In this case we worked closely with the client to craft multiple initial concepts for the desk as a way to inspire and inform the entire design. From that point on it was a study in what can be accomplished by bringing skilled craftspeople into a project early and in a collaborative manner. Working with Xylem on millwork, McConnell Studios on steel, Apex on stone, and CG&D on the glass we designed a highly polished and refined reception area that portrayed the sense of permanence, quiet strength, and tactility that our client hoped to achieve. In terms of materiality we incorporated walnut plywood, Carrere marble, 1/4" folded steel, 1/2" thick edge lit etched glass and stainless steel for the rods and reveals.

Wall Sculpture

Cary, NCWith an initial charge to create artwork that was integrated within the fabric of the space, that appeared in various locations throughout the space, that was tactile and could - in the end - be fabricated by craftsmen instead of artists, the process began in earnest.Through a number of iterations and processes and over the course of many months the pieces evolved to become the 8 distinct though related wall hung sculptures they are today. Using 5 types of an off-the-shelf lava stone tile product we worked with McConnell Studios to arrive at a solution that was easily fabricated, but that allowed for a great deal of variety from one piece to the next. The steel structure that was devised allows for a straightforward method of attachment using two 3"x3" steel angles. The ribs that support the stone were all identical, with the exception of the angle of rotation from the center line. With the combination of this subtle variation and the various textures of lava stone incorporated on each piece, they each read individually on their own while belonging to the same family. With some pieces resembling a sine wave and others a sort of random madness, visitors to the space are intended to experience a different sort of emotion depending on which corridor they enter.

Morris Renovation

January 2009Vernacular Studio’s Ashley Morris and her husband Noah completed a significant renovation of their home in Raleigh’s Historic Oakwood.
