For a couple of retiring empty
nesters, the dream was to create
a new home with a down to earth
and sustainable mindset… and a
flair for the dramatic. The
existing structure on the
property was in very poor
condition and was demolished
(and the materials reused) by
Habitat for Humanity. The
existing masonry foundation was
then recycled and the stage was
set for the new structure. With
universal design, proper solar
orientation, high energy
efficiency, sustainable material
selection, and excellent indoor
air quality all as elements,
modern design served as the
catalyst for the proper
alignment of all the components
in the equation. The two main
bars of this scheme: living and
working, are connected by
outdoor living space and an
enclosed glass entry canopy.
The third is the service bar
that parallels the living bar
and provides convenient access
to the desired functions at
multiple locations. A full wood
shop located at the rear of the
garage promises to provide years
of shaping, carving and building
followed by relaxing nights
under the stars on the adjacent
deck and screen porch.
