UNBUILT
This is the first iteration of
an unbuilt project designed for
a couple in Durham, NC. The
narrow and sloping site proved a
challenge when attempting to
accommodate a 3500SF courtyard
house that exists solely on one
level. All of the spaces open
onto the central courtyard that
is bound by a public volume, a
private volume and by a formal
rose garden. A site wall leads
visitors to the entry and
through the house into the
courtyard space that is located
almost ten feet below the
surrounding grade level. By
pushing the structure and
courtyard into the site the
visual impact of the home is
minimized while the sense of
arrival and discovery for
visitors is heightened.
