Located just outside of Historic
Oakwood in downtown Raleigh, NC
the clients for this home were
looking for an unusual blend of
architectural styles in a home
with an integral courtyard
space. Their original
description of a ‘modern
Victorian’ seemed unattainable,
but through the ebb and flow of
the design process they refined
their vision to arrive at a
design that plays well with the
historic fabric of the
neighborhood while minimizing
ornament and maximizing
openness. The 3600 SF is spread
out over three stories in an
efficient plan that fits well on
the small downtown infill site.
It maximizes the connection from
inside to outside, while
maintaining a sense of privacy
throughout the house. The
elliptical stair provides a
modern interpretation of the
historical circular stairs that
are found on many of the
surrounding structures. The
material palette on the exterior
is dark stone and heavy wood
members that create a lasting
presence to the fast moving
traffic below. The minimalist
interiors with dark wood floors
and white walls create a stark
contrast and will serve well to
showcase the owner’s growing art
collection. The project is
currently under construction and
will be completed in 2008.
