Wall Sculpture
Cary, NC
With an initial charge to create artwork that was integrated within the fabric of the space, that appeared in various locations throughout the space, that was tactile and could - in the end - be fabricated by craftsmen instead of artists, the process began in
earnest.
Through a number of iterations and processes and over the course of many months the pieces evolved to become the 8 distinct though related wall hung sculptures they are today. Using 5 types of an off-the-shelf lava stone tile product we worked with McConnell Studios to arrive at a solution that was easily fabricated, but that allowed for a great deal of variety from one piece to the next. The steel structure that was devised allows for a straightforward method of attachment using two 3"x3" steel angles. The ribs that support the stone were all identical, with the exception of the angle of rotation from the center line. With the combination of this subtle variation and the various textures of lava stone incorporated on each piece, they each read individually on their own while belonging to the same family. With some pieces resembling a sine wave and others a sort of random madness, visitors to the space are intended to experience a different sort of emotion depending on which corridor they enter.
