This horse barn and storage facility for a private client in Stokes County, NC will provide its owner with the ability to board and care for up to 8 horses on their 120 acres of rolling hills and riding trails. With stalls, a feed room, tack room and outdoor wash area, the stables portion of the building meets all the functional requirements for the daily operation of a horse boarding facility. In the multipurpose storage area the owner will store riding equipment as well as machinery and small farm equipment, in addition to providing an outdoor work area and large indoor area for family functions. The final component of the program is an outdoor hay barn that is located immediately adjacent to the main structure.
While the functionality of the barn is paramount, the owners also believe strongly in the maintaining the highest sense of environmental sensitivity as well as promoting a modern design aesthetic. The structure is sited for the most advantageous solar orientation, the walls are to be hay bales with stucco finish to maximize thermal mass, there are excellent natural ventilation and lighting, and all of the materials selected for the structure are those that can be taken directly from the owner’s property. The form of the building is minimal, though it is intricately detailed to express the language of the structural connections and architectural detailing.
This project is currently in the design phase.
