This is an unbuilt project designed for a couple in Durham, NC. The narrow and sloping site proved a challenge when attempting to accommodate a courtyard house that exists mostly on one level. All of the public spaces open onto the central courtyard that is bound on one side by a pool of water and on another by a formal rose garden. A site wall leads visitors to the entry and through the house into the courtyard space. The massing of the primary volumes and their relationship to one another and the site attempts to recall the happenstance nature of Mediterranean hill towns.
