At the turn of the 19th century, more than 95% of the state of North Carolina was involved with agriculture. Today, less than 3% of the population is farmers and the state continues to show that it is, and has been, a world leader in technological innovation. This shift from an agrarian society to a culture of intellectual pursuit provided the inspiration that both organizes and identifies the new headquarters building for the NC AIA.
The dichotomy of this relationship between North Carolina’s past and present is formally represented by the contrast between the two main forms of the building. The multipurpose space responds to the agricultural vernacular of the state through the expression of its wood frame and seamed metal cladding. Conversely, the main structure looks to the future both in its innovative use of traditional building materials and application of advanced glazing strategies that allow for increased transparency and energy efficiency.
In terms of identity, the pattern language of traditional farming methods proved the visual cues that directed the development of the building facades. The plan is organized around a massive stone wall of North Carolina granite that wraps through and around the building. From a distance the stone reads monolithically and pays homage to the stone clad government buildings adjacent to the site. At a human scale the stone reveals its subtle patterning and exceedingly tactile nature, inviting visitors to engage its surface.
