1900 Hillsborough Street
Raleigh, NC
6000 SF
This historic brick building sits on the wedge-shaped corner of a main intersection of Hillsborough Street near NC State University. Over the past century, several add-hoc alterations and general neglect left the iconic "Darryl's Building" void of its original character. The design concept centered on recapturing the essence of the building while reinterpreting the long-abandoned storefront along Hillsborough Street. On the exterior, modern, efficient aluminum storefront contrasts with the existing weathered brick facade, providing a visual dialogue between the interior activities and bustling streetscape. Inside, simple gestures were made to draw guests' attention to the existing character of the building. A series of bearing masonry walls that formed the original storefront bays were cleaned but left unpainted and existing non-structural wood timbers were removed and reused to create a number of architectural features.
