101 Lounge + Cafe

Raleigh, NC
2000 SF

101 is a unique project that posed several design challenges, including how to take a bistro and lounge that has diverse programmatic requirements and combine them into a cohesive design concept; all of which must fit into a two-story residential corner unit of a mixed-use building. The bistro serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, but takes on the role of a lounge and bar for the after dinner crowd.  In addition, the owners asked that the second level to be able to serve as small conference and meeting location complete with multimedia capabilities.  With the first floor mainly serving the daytime hours and the second level serving as the VIP lounge during the night, the design concept sought to create a relationship between the first and second floor that mimicked the diurnal cycle of the 24 hour day. Building on the complimentary relationship between day and night, the circulation between the first floor and second floor is juxtaposed between a white screen wall and a dark wood wall alluding to dusk and dawn and the transition between light and dark.
